  • Graduated in Pharmacy and Biochemistry, the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), 1990;
  • Master’s in Medical Science, the State University of Campinas, UNICAMP (1994) in Molecular Biology;
  • Doctorate in genetics and Molecular Biology, the Federal University of Rio Grande Sul and in the Stem cell Laboratory of the New York Blood Center, New York, U.S.A (2002);
  • Post-doctorate at Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany, in the use of nanotechnology techniques for tissue engineering through the cultivation of stem cells on nanofiber scaffolds for the reconstruction of organs and tissue (2008 and 2010);
  • Professor and head of the Hematology and Stem Cell laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) since 1995;
  • Professor of Tissue Engineering and Nanomedicine, post-graduate program;
  • Founder and ex-president of the Stem Cell Research Institute, Porto Alegre, Brazil;
  • Scientific advisor for the Brazilian Government for the elaboration of the law to approve research into human embryonic stem cells;
  • Advisor to the minister of the Supreme Federal Court during the debate on the law for approval of the use of human embryonic stem cells;
  • Member of the International Stem Cell Banking Initiative group;
  • Experience in stem cell and engineering research, working mainly in the following areas: umbilical cord blood, stem cells, nanotechnology, electrospinning and tissue engineering;
